This volume provides a broad insight into the state of development of MHD power in the Soviet Union and a detailed analysis of the database for the U-500 system--a conventional gas-fired steam plant as well as the MHD topping plant. Research scientists and development engineers around the world have much to learn from a detailed description of the technical data underlying the design of the plant and its intricate processes, described for Western readers comprehensively for the first time in the present volume. The book was first published in the Soviet Union. A decision was made by the U.S. Dept. of Energy to have it translated into English and published in the U.S. in order to make the subject more widely available to Western specialists.
