India's space‐ based earth remote sensing started with the launch of Bhaskar‐1 in 1979. Since then it has designed, developed, and launched a large number electro‐optical instruments to provide data sets on continuous basis to various users. It has designed and developed a mini satellite called IMS‐1 in 2008 to provide access to data to students and scientists of third world countries. It has developed the capability to develop low‐ cost high performance satellites and payloads. Four band Multi‐spectral camera (Mx) for IMS‐1 was designed with a resolution of 36 m and a swath of 151 km. The bands were selected to cater to natural resources and disaster related monitoring. It was a push ‐broom camera and has separate optics, detector and electronics for each band. The main goal of the camera design was to achieve the required performance with minimum resources of mass, power, data rate and size. It was realized by maximally using indigenous components. It has used COTS components. The performance and functional goals were achieved with in two years. This chapter gives a brief description of the instrument and subsystems, developmental highlights and test results. It also gives a brief account of data products and post launch performance of the instrument.
