Many human‐system integration (HSI) issues must be addressed before remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPASs) can safely share the National Airspace System (NAS). In this chapter, research and progress are discussed with respect to these issues, which include pilot‐centering design of the ground control station, automation design, separation assurance, RPAS predictability, information flow and coordination among NAS participants, and new training needs. Continued progress depends on complementary research and exploration initiatives across a range of settings (e.g., basic to live flight), and the widespread proactive use of RPAS safety reporting systems and their data to detect and respond to emergent safety concerns. In addition, research needs test beds and methods that assess complex interactions between control station interface designs, training requirements, and NAS requirements.
