Control system compensation is the strategy used by the control system designer to improve system dynamic performance through the addition of dynamic elements in order to mitigate some of the undesirable features of the control elements present in the system. Such undesirable features may include the integrator lag of 90 degrees, slow response of some transducers and sensors and process delays, non‐linearities and other undesirable characteristics. This chapter shows an application of compensation techniques to specific control system examples in order to demonstrate the performance benefits that can be accomplished via these techniques. The integrators and first‐order lags create anticipatory elements such as proportional plus integral control, proportional plus integral plus derivative control, lead–lag compensation and lag–lead compensation.
