While major railroad lines in the United States are not electrified, some very important advances have been made in the area of railroad electrification. For example, several coal haul operations were electrified and the first commercial frequency 50-kV electrified system anywhere in the world was built in northern Arizona. Also, major changes were taking place in the older established electrified transit systems where it was found that new cars with their higher horsepower and airconditioning loads could no longer operate properly or economically on systems designed back in the early 1900s. Since these older lines could not be upgraded by going to higher voltages, other compensating techniques have been and are being applied. It is the purpose of this paper to review the unique characteristics of electrified transit and locomotives, illustrate the voltage problem on long and short lines and finally review the techniques which have been successfully applied to alleviate voltage problems.
