This chapter discusses the effects of a finite span on the flow patterns. The length of a wing from tip to tip is called span. In the middle of a finite wing the flow pattern may still be planar, and fluid flows from leading edge to trailing edge. In general, fluid flows from high pressure areas to low pressure areas attempting to equalize the pressures. At the wing tips, fluid will move from the underside with high pressure to the upper side of the wing with low pressure. In modeling a wing, the influence of the start‐up vortex is often neglected because it is assumed to be very far away and its effect has subsided at the location of the wing. Bound vorticity creates a difference velocity parallel to the mean velocity. The free vorticity induces a difference velocity perpendicular to the mean velocity.
