Human operators exercise control over the unmanned AV and its payloads. The mode in which this is done can range from complete, real‐time remote control to preparing and loading a total mission plan into the AV before launch and then allowing it to carry out the planned mission without further human intervention. Both limits of this range have been used at one time of another, but various intermediate levels of control are much more common. Much of the flight of the AV may be largely autonomous, usually with provisions to alert an operator to intervene when exceptional situation occur. The lefel of operator involvement in the operation of the payload varies for different payloads and missions.
