The Geostationary Imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer (GIFTS) was selected from a competitive proposal process in 1999 for the NASA New Millennium Program (NMP) Earth Observing ‐ 3 (EO‐3) mission to produce and space validate the technology and measurement concept needed to revolutionize severe storm and extended range weather prediction. Although the satellite program was cancelled, an engineering demonstration unit was built and the science measurement capability was demonstrated through a series of thermal vacuum chamber characterization and calibration tests and by obtaining atmospheric sounding and lunar imaging spectral radiance observations. Today, Europe is developing a GIFTS‐like instrument to fly as a component of the Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) operational satellite series. China plans to fly a modest version of the GIFTS on its FY4 series of geostationary satellites beginning in 2016. In the US the GIFTS capability is being developed as the Sounding and Tracking Observatory for Regional Meteorology (STORM) by a commercial venture which has a US license to fly as many as six instruments as hosted payloads on a constellation of satellites that encircle the globe, thereby providing continuous coverage of the world's atmospheric temperature, moisture, wind, and gaseous composition as required for revolutionary improvements in weather, climate, and air quality prediction. This chapter describes the historical basis of the GIFTS program, the engineering aspects of the GIFTS instrument, and the scientific rationale for the operational implementation of the GIFTS measurement concept.
