This chapter discusses the thumb rules to provide a framework within which most composite designs can perform successfully. Design guidelines are a result of analysis and trending, test results and experience. As such, they typically have a range of applicability outside of which they may or may not be as successful. The most important guidelines with a brief discussion are listed in the chapter. The guidelines are layup/stacking sequence‐related, loading and performance‐related, environmental sensitivity and manufacturing constraints, and configuration and layout‐related.
