Many species of birds migrate. Birds migrate along flyways or routes between breeding and wintering grounds. Birds migrate northward in the spring due to the availability of insects, budding plants, and nesting locations. As winter approaches birds move south again due to the drop in numbers of insects and other food sources. Since many bird species can withstand freezing temperatures, escaping the cold weather is not a motive for migration as long as an adequate supply of food is available. Nearly 40% of the world's 10 000 bird species are migratory ones. The rest are permanent residents.
The types of migration that birds undertake are identified either as: north–south or south–north; longitudinal or loop; leap‐frog, walk, or swim; short, medium, or long‐distance migrations.
The famous bird migration flyways are thoroughly described. Some institutions define four major routes while others have identified five. These four routes will be described in detail here. Famous birds flying these different routes are described and the numbers involved are given.
Radio telemetry techniques are used to determine the birds' movements over areas ranging from small ones, such as breeding territories of resident bird species, to large ones covered by international migratory species.
