Modern vehicles are controlled electronically rather than purely mechanically. Most automakers use a few baseline vehicle architectures to build various vehicle models, which differ from each other largely in their electronic systems. In ‐ vehicle devices and components are controlled by electronic control units (ECUs). Autonomous sensors, such as radars and cameras, are versatile tools to aid and enable active safety systems in vehicles. Communications among various vehicle subsystems are essential for the proper functioning of most components of modern vehicles. In addition communications within each subsystem are needed to control actuators or receive feedback from sensors. The dominant onboard network is currently the controller area network (CAN).
