Any data link has a minimum signal‐to‐noise level at which it can succeed in receiving the data that it transmits. In the real world, a data link must have a signal margin to overcome many possible sources of signal fade or increase in noise. The size of the margin for a data link are driven by a number of basic characteristics of the data link, including transmitter power, antenna gain, processing gain associated with the data‐link waveform, atmospheric effects, interference from other signal, range, and obstruction of the line of sight from the ground antenna to the AV.
