This chapter provides a method by which Ford Motor Company identified the components that yield a robust fuel delivery system. A robust system or subsystem must perform consistently regardless of the noise factors to which it is exposed. The chapter also examines the fuel delivery subsystem to specify the fuel delivery components that contribute to a robust fuel system. Parameter design using Taguchi's design of experiment method uses a system that aspires to an ideal function of performance. The ideal function is the measured response to a system input signal. To minimize variations when exposed to the different noise factor levels, the authors primarily concern with maximizing the S/N ratio. The chapter summarizes the effects of the control factors on S/N ratio, and provides a discussion on sensitivity analysis. The optimal design proved to have better performance than the initial design in both bench testing and vehicle evaluation.
