In the US the FAA derives its power for making rules and regulations from the US Congress in the form of enabling legislation. Standards Development Organizations (SDOs) work with engineers, scientists, and other industry personnel to develop non‐biased standards or specification documents that serve industry and protect the public. The FAA has supported and sponsored international SDOs dedicated to developing standards and regulations for the manufacture and operation of unmanned aircraft. The organizations discussed in this chapter, as well as others not named, provide valuable support to industry, governments, and regulators as they work through the maze of challenges and emerging technologies to achieve the common goal of a global air traffic management system that will accommodate commercial RPAS operations, eVTOL air taxis, piloted, remotely piloted, and autonomous aircraft at the lower levels, and high‐altitude long‐endurance aircraft operating at or above commercial flight levels.
