This Chapter presents the fundamentals in the derivation of satellite motion and the design of satellite constellations. Initially, the mathematical proof of Kepler's three Planetary Laws of Motion with its applicability to satellite motion is presented by making use of Newton's Three Laws of Motion. The equations for satellite orbit, the satellite velocity and the orbital period are presented. This is followed by the derivation of the satellite location with respect to different co‐ordinate systems. The effects of perturbing forces on the satellite motion equations are then discussed. Finally, different techniques for the design of different satellite orbit constellations are presented.
This Chapter, which comprises 34 pages, includes 20 figures and tables, and 15 references to related work.
