The normal physiology of the human body when in flight is discussed in terms of the influence of altitude, changes in pressure, temperature, acceleration and sensory perception. Hypoxia and hyperventilation, the effects of reduced atmospheric pressure including trapped gas dysbarism, decompression sickness, sleep and fatigue, transmeridian travel, motion sickness and passenger health are reviewed in detail. Guidelines for medical clearance, in‐flight medical emergencies and aircraft emergency medical equipment are discussed including birth in flight and death in flight.
