Most types of tracked (and sometimes wheeled) vehicles are steered by some form of so‐called skid steering whereby the tracks (or wheels) on either side of the vehicle are caused to rotate at different speeds. Some vehicles, such as the Hagglunds BV 206, are two unit articulated vehicles that steer by altering the angle between the two units. The advantage of skid steering for small rubber‐tracked and wheeled bucket loaders, and robotic vehicles, is high manoeuvrability at low speeds. For military armoured vehicles, another benefit is that the compactness of track systems allows significant increases in internal hull volume for given overall vehicle dimensions. Although most wheeled vehicles are Ackermann steered, there a few types of wheeled vehicle that are skid steered. The steering performance model is similar in principle to that used for predicting the response of Ackermann steered vehicles.
