This chapter introduces reference signals and disturbance signals are in the discrete‐time state feedback control. It also introduces disturbance rejection and reference tracking with a disturbance‐observer‐based approach. The chapter deals with the general discussions on disturbance signals and their characterizations. In general, a disturbance is associated with a slowly changing variable, and in the frequency domain it has pre‐dominant low frequency contents. The chapter argues that in state estimation is to correctly estimate the state vector in the presence of input disturbance and output disturbance. However, from control system design point of view, it is much more effective to derive a state feedback control system using the input disturbance estimation. The disturbance‐observer‐based control system is conceptually simple, which basically says that if there is a disturbance in the system, the disturbance should be compensated in the estimation.
