Regardless of the type of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), the propulsion system is composed of at least the following components: a prime mover; an electric motor with a DC‐DC converter, a DC‐AC inverter, and the controller; an energy storage system (ESS); a transmission system. The prime mover of a hybrid vehicle is its main energy source, which generally is one of the following: a gasoline engine, a diesel engine, or fuel cells. The selection of the prime mover is based mainly on the requirements of drivability, fuel economy, and emissions. The brushless DC motor and the AC induction motor are widely used for HEV due to their higher efficiency, lower costs, less maintenance, and longer lifetimes. The ESS consists of an energy storage pack, a voltage, current, and temperature measurement module (VITM), a cell‐balancing circuit, and a cooling/heating system; in addition, battery‐related estimation algorithms also play a key role.
