China's techno‐nationalist efforts, through its civil‐military fusion programmes and ongoing technology prioritisation programmes, had provided a microcosm of the comprehensiveness of its overall technology prowess. Accurate navigation and precise timing are essential for hypersonic missiles, enabling them to manoeuvre effectively and strike their targets with pinpoint accuracy. China's hypersonic missile utilised terrain reference navigation, which relies on terrain features to guide the missile, while image correlation and digital scene matching employ detailed images of a target area to ensure precise targeting. Artificial intelligence was employed not only to design, develop and test the hypersonic missile and its entire technology platform, it was also used to execute real‐time flight commands and operate all the missile's guidance algorithms. In response to China's hypersonic missile advances, the U.S. defence establishment, with heavy involvement from the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency, hastened the development and testing of a prototype under a programme called Hypersonic Air‐breathing Weapons Concept.
