Recent results from a survey conducted on the cybersecurity posture in the automotive industry provide valuable insight into the current challenges the automotive industry is facing. This chapter reviews the main challenges in the automotive industry leading to vulnerabilities in automotive systems, including challenges related to coding, testing and the use of open‐source software. To overcome the challenges, automotive organizations can apply a number of automated security solutions in the product development phases as presented in this chapter. These solutions comprise static code analysis, software composition analysis, and security testing approaches including security functional testing, vulnerability scanning, and fuzz testing. The chapter discusses some examples of security solutions that automotive organizations can apply during the operation and maintenance phases. These solutions and activities encompass cybersecurity monitoring, vulnerability management, incident response, and over‐the‐air updates.
