The use of GNSS in batch mode for travel surveys is a promising tool for contracting authorities. In practice, the use of GPS (and eventually the Galileo GNSS) for travel surveys is still little used in France or even in Europe, and remains confined to the field of research, while in France INRETS (then French national transport research center, now IFSTTAR) was involved in the design of a GPS component for the 2007 national survey of transportation and travel (ENTD). The same type of tool might also serve in more targeted travel studies; this is the objective of the GPS batch mode travel‐time data‐management application developed on the initiative of the Centre d'études technique de l'équipement (CETE) Méditerranée. This chapter provides the information using these two examples, a realistic idea of what it is possible to do with geopositioning tools in terms of batch mode travel analysis. global positioning system; satellite navigation
