In the energy sector, to achieve the worldwide goal of net‐zero carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions by the year 2050, the responsibility lies with all the stakeholders. Conventional transportation relies on the products formed from fossil fuels and contributes significantly toward greenhouse gas emissions. To de‐carbonize road transport, which releases 73% of total transport‐related emissions, the electric vehicles (EVs) are the key technology. The extensive adoption of EVs and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), supported by the government's stringent policies, tax rebates, and incentives, are fast‐paced steps toward achieving zero emission goals by 2050. EV technology has matured over a period of time with variant models. The advent of new technologies in the batteries and their optimized costs has pushed the growth of EVs. The use of conventional fuel vehicles, especially in road transport, is likely to phase out by the end of 2050. The chapter discusses the global environmental concerns in context with the transportation and role of electric and hybrid vehicles in achieving a sustainable and economic environment. The insights of EV technologies and their socio‐economic impact have been presented. The government initiatives in promotion of e‐mobility by different countries have been discussed.
