Many Mediterranean forests are still used for traditional hunting. To manage use of public lands for hunting and to regulate the hunting capacity within these territories, decision makers require accurate information about game populations, the conservation status of the forests, and conditions of environmental development. This chapter discusses the use of unmanned vehicles for sensing tasks and describes the approaches and considerations for effective search using census taking as an example. It explores the technological solutions to what historically were tasks conducted by humans, namely identification of a field of view, in situ flight planning to prevent gaps in coverage, and methods to ensure consistency throughout a task. Search planning for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) operations occurs in four distinct phases: Preliminary Analysis, Flight Geometry Control, Image Preparation, and the Analysis and Identification of Individuals. UAVs can be considered as good platforms for the observation and estimation of gaming populations.
