This chapter describes a US Federal Aviation Administration initiative, led by the FAA’s Air Traffic Organization, which forecasts delays at major airports 6–12 months in advance. Each month, a demand forecast is created based on airline published schedules and historical operational data. These demand projections are then combined with airport capacities and planned construction schedules to estimate delays six months in the future. Delays are estimated in two ways. In the first, a simple representation of airport capacity, called the Annual Service Volume, is used. The second approach uses detailed modeling of each day to project delays. Both approaches are discussed in this chapter.
