Orthogonal frequency‐division multiple access (OFDMA) is a network access technology employed in a number of contemporary wireless telecommunication networks. The parent technical concept of OFDMA, that is, orthogonal frequency‐division multiplexing (OFDM), is a multicarrier modulation (MCM) scheme, as well as a multiplexing technique. This chapter examines OFDM and its virtues in combating time and frequency dispersive channel distortions. In the context of OFDM, the channel coding is an appropriate signal processing technique to be used in conjunction with subcarriers of OFDM signal for the purpose of mitigation of fading effect. The chapter presents a system‐level characterization of a coded OFDM (COFDM). It outlines the fundamental features of scalable orthogonal frequency‐division multiple access (SOFDMA). SOFDMA is the foundation on which the physical layer protocols of mobile WiMAX network and AeroMACS network are built.
