At Chubb's Wharf in Mystic Seaport, museum‐goers can explore the Morgan's upper deck, listen to interpreters and maritime researchers, join them in singing shanties, push the windlass around, and watch seasoned sailors climb the rigging. Seeking privacy in meditation above the cluttered deck and beyond the netting of the shrouds, Ishmael is only fully comfortable aloft. Indeed, working a ship involves practices that make word commensurate with action. When the wind changes and the ship must tack or if a gale rises, the sailors on deck respond immediately to orders with a kind of “command and repeat” bellowing between mate and crew. Whaling ships were built by local investors and backed by local bankers and insurers, many of whom were family relations. Herman Merville's first whaling ship brought home a mixed cargo of 1350 barrels of whale oil and 7 tons of whalebone.
