This chapter summarizes the challenges identified in the paradigms of automated driving. The first and most significant challenge facing the introduction of automated driving is that vehicle manufacturers seem to see the paradigm for automated vehicles as one where the vehicle is in sole control of its movements. But the reality is that the vehicle is just one actor in a controlled driving paradigm, and a controlled actor at that. Vehicle manufacturers ploughing lone furrows to introduce automated vehicles and Mobility as a Service (MaaS), using different paradigms, and defective architectures, will delay or prevent the introduction of these technologies. There has been much publicity that MaaS using automated vehicles will reduce the demand for in‐city parking. And combined with policy shifts to encourage the use of public transport in cities, that seems a likely outcome.
