This chapter shows what the ideal engine should be for a helicopter‐type rotary wing, an aircraft, and a car, based on loads and power requirements. It describes the determination of hover flight power by using the Froude's theory. The chapter discusses the power balance approach to analyze the power required in forward level flight, at constant altitude and speed, for a helicopter. It analyzes the ideal motorization for an aircraft by analyzing the lift and drag forces during the different flight regimes. The chapter discusses the motorization for an automobile and the factors to be considered when defining the maximum tractive force that an engine should provide. An ideal engine for a land vehicle is characterized by adherence limit torque limitation by wheel slip; motor characteristic at constant maximum power; and limitation in engine velocity.
