This chapter deals with color management for digital cameras and digital capture devices. There are two commonly‐used digital camera settings; digital photographers can shoot directly to a fully‐processed, ready to use JPEG image, or photographers may select an intermediate, un‐processed file format called RAW. The chapter considers the color management procedures that apply to these two primary digital camera workflows. It also considers JPEG (lossy) and TIFF (lossless) file formats as used in digital photography. The chapter focuses on a digital camera's charge‐coupled device (CCD) image sensor and then describes two options for color management ‐ a fully‐processed, ready to use, JPEG image, or an unprocessed RAW file. The chapter identifies significant differences between scanner profiling and camera profiling. It also describes a paradigm shift in the profiling approach between scanners and digital cameras.
