The driveline is fundamental to a vehicle, and depending on purpose and application it can be modeled in different ways. The first section of this chapter covers the general modeling methodology for obtaining the fundamental equations describing a driveline. A basic model for a rigid driveline is obtained in the second section, where experimental data from a truck is used for illustrative purposes. Driveline surge and driveline dynamics are covered in the third and fourth sections. The fifth section includes the behavior of a closed clutch and other nonlinearities like backlash. The sixth section treats the modeling when the driveline is separated into two parts, which is the case when in neutral gear or when the clutch is disengaged/open. The seventh section models a slipping clutch, and the last section models a torque converter.
