This chapter introduces some of the basic concepts of vibration analysis for multiple degree of freedom (MDoF) discrete parameter systems, since there are many significant differences to single degree of freedom (SDoF) systems. It focuses on setting up the equations of motion, finding natural frequencies and mode shapes for free vibration, considering damping and determining the forced vibration response with various forms of excitation relevant to aircraft loads. Undamped normal mode shapes of vibration may be used to transform the coupled equations of motion in physical coordinates into a different (principal/modal) coordinate form where coupling is absent. The chapter analyzes the performance of a two‐DoF rigid aircraft in heave and pitch, and discusses a free–free system that is not connected to ‘earth’ via any support stiffness. Subsequently, responses for harmonic forced vibration, transient/random forced vibration, transient forced vibration, random forced vibration are described.
