Compact hydrogen vehicle storage with a quick refill option is a key success factor for fuel cell electric vehicles and future zero emission mobility in the long term. Compressed gaseous hydrogen storage up to 70 MPa is about to become the industry mainstream among the physical hydrogen vehicle storage options. However, cryo‐compressed hydrogen storage, namely, the storage of compressed cryogenic hydrogen gas generated from liquid hydrogen by a cryogenic compressor into super‐insulated pressure vessels, could offer evident advantages: improved refueling station efficiency and operating cost, increased vehicle range, with rising advantage towards larger storage capacity, improved storage integration in the vehicle, and high onboard safety. This chapter introduces the thermodynamic, design, and operating principles of the novel concept of cryo‐compressed hydrogen vehicle storage.
