Aircraft are controlled when the pilot uses the control surfaces singly or in combination for a range of different manoeuvres; of course, thrust may also be varied. There are two types of flight manoeuvre that have to be considered in the design of an aircraft, often referred to as: equilibrium (or balanced/steady/trimmed) manoeuvres and dynamic manoeuvres. The calculation methodology is different in each case and is addressed in this chapter. The chapter considers the process of determining the balanced response (deformation and component loads) in a number of symmetric equilibrium manoeuvres, using a progression of fairly basic mathematical models for both rigid and simple flexible aircraft. The aircraft is treated effectively as a ‘particle’ under heave acceleration, i.e. no rotational effects are present. When equilibrium manoeuvres are considered, only the steady effect of the Flight Control System (FCS) is important and so a full FCS model is not required.
