This chapter describes eight steps for robust optimization include: defining scope for robust optimization, identifying ideal function/response, developing signal and noise strategy, and selecting control factors and levels. The steps also include executing and collecting data, conducting data analysis, predicting and confirming factorial effects, and rotating the plan‐do‐check‐act (PDCA) cycle. Robust assessment is a subset of robust optimization as the first three steps are the same. Further steps for robust assessment include: selecting designs for assessment, executing and collecting data, conducting data analysis, making judgments, and rotating the PDCA cycle. Before preceding the eight steps, it is strongly recommended that a project area be selected by catch‐balling between executives, R&D and engineering management. For instance, new technology such as Stop and Start can be identified as a project area. A project area is sometimes called a mega‐project or theme. Then several optimization scopes can be strategically identified.
