A space rendezvous consists of reaching position and/or velocity conditions associated with a target at a given time. The rendezvous is composed of successive phases including phasing, closing, homing, and final docking. When the target is in a circular orbit, the relative dynamics are described by the Hill–Clohessy–Wiltshire equations, which admit analytical solutions. These equations are used for the preliminary definition of a rendezvous scenario. Specific control laws compatible with onboard guidance, such as linear quadratic control, proportional navigation, or velocity‐to‐gain, are used for rendezvous, interception, or landing missions. They offer the robustness needed to take account of uncertainties, particularly those linked to dynamic models and orbit determination.
