Despite enormous advances made in computational methods, model testing is still the most reliable way of predicting resistance and powering requirements for a future ship. This chapter discusses the physical assets used in model tests: ship model, propeller model, and the towing tank or cavitation tunnel which represent the waterway. Models are made as long as possible given the restrictions of towing tank or circulating water tunnel. Some of the larger model basins test models up to 12 m in length. Most models are made of wood. Lower Reynolds numbers at model scale are also responsible for the requirement to have turbulence generators. On a full scale vessel, the boundary layer will transition from laminar to turbulent flow a couple of centimeters behind the bow. The chapter lists model basins and their websites. Emphasis has been placed on model basins whose websites provide information and photos of their facilities.
