Shipboard cable designations are standardized with unique symbols that directly correspond to the number of conductors constituting the cable. For shipboard electrical system design and development, cable requirements must be examined to ensure that the cable selection is within the ampacity limit of the cable as well as within the allowable voltage drop limits for specific applications. The IEEE 45 requirement is to run cable in hangers and tiers, which allows uniform heat dissipation. To prevent the grounding system from becoming an interference distribution system, the grounding must be coordinated with the shielding. A round, symmetrical cable gives the best electrical performance and resistance to deleterious effects. One reason is that round symmetry creates more uniform electrical characteristics in the cable. The insulation must have excellent dielectric properties to prevent breakdown from the stresses of voltage and current spike, corona discharges, and so forth.
