This chapter presents the prototype system built for the Cooperative Intersection Collision Avoidance System for Violations (CICAS‐V) project as well as the Mercedes‐Benz Integrated Safety demonstration that was based on CICAS‐V and was publicly showcased at the 15th Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) World Congress in New York City in 2008. The Integrated Safety demonstration showed a successful integration of CICAS‐V with existing in‐vehicle safety features. The goal of CICAS‐V is to improve safety at intersections. The system relies on dedicated short‐range communications (DSRC) to exchange safety messages in real time between a roadside unit (RSU) installed at an intersection and an onboard unit (OBU) installed on the vehicle.
