Residual stresses are stresses that continue to exist in a material even when there are no external forces acting on it. Residual stresses are important because they affect the strength of the part, either positively or negatively, and may also result in distortion. Two principal causes of residual stresses in materials processing are as follows: thermal stresses, and nonuniform plastic deformation. The chapter discusses some of the basic concepts necessary for analyzing residual stresses that may develop in materials. The two primary effects of residual stresses are as follows: apparent change in the strength of a part, and distortion of the part. Various methods are available for measuring residual stresses. The major ones include: stress relaxation, X‐ray diffraction, and neutron diffraction. Methods for relieving residual stresses and distortion can be grouped into two general categories: thermal treatments, and mechanical treatments.
