Chapter 2 begins with a presentation of the operational features of mobile satellite networks. This is followed by a review of the currently deployed commercial networks and those that are planned for the near future. Initially, the architecture of a mobile satellite network is presented. This is followed by a presentation of the various options that are available for implementation of the satellite constellation. The review of geostationary satellite systems includes descriptions of the Inmarsat, Eurelsat, Thuraya and ACeS solutions. Non‐geostationary satellite systems are divided into ‘little LEO’ and ‘big LEO’ categories. Detailed descriptions of the technical characteristics and the commercial background to systems including ORBCOMM, GLOBALSTAR and IRIDIUM are presented.

This Chapter, which comprises 40 pages, includes 23 figures and tables and 27 references to related work.
