The main purposes of the suspension system are to reduce the transmission of vibration and shock to the vehicle crew and on‐board equipment, and to reduce dynamic loading on the vehicle structure. The factors that need to be considered when modelling and measuring suspension performance are: characteristics of the terrain over which the vehicle is running; forward velocity and response of the vehicle; and human response to vibration and shock (HRV). The suspension also has a part to play in ensuring the vehicle steers and handles safely. Computer modelling of tracked vehicle suspensions was developed at DERA over a number of years, conducted with the aid of laboratory testing of the characteristics of suspension components and also by vehicle measurements on repeatable concrete courses. Road and off‐road surface profiles usually have random characteristics and are classified in terms of their vertical‐displacement power spectral density (PSD).
