The safety records of the air transport industry are extremely good. Moreover, long term accident statistics of commercial aviation show that safety risk per flight has decreased faster than the number of flights has increased. All together this has made air transport one of the safest modes of transport. In spite of these very good safety records of commercial aviation, this chapter demonstrates that there is a serious safety concern regarding airport safety performance.
The high level concern is that the decrease of safety risk per flight has been caused predominantly from a reduction in airborne and aircraft related accidents, and not from a reduction in accidents during take‐off, landing and ground operations. For decades these issues did not attract the attention because the overall accident rate was still steadily going down. However, during the last decade, the number of accidents that occur during the take‐off, landing and ground operation parts of a flight seems to have surpassed the number of all other accidents.
In order to gain a better understanding of these airport related safety issues, this chapter provides an analysis of the accident types occurring during take‐off, landing and ground operation, as well as other main accident types. Subsequently, the chapter shows that safety driving mechanisms and initiatives play different roles in the reduction of different accident categories.
The analysis performed in this chapter provides a new insight into airport safety performance, and leads to specific recommendations of initiatives to ensure a future continuation of the extremely good safety records of commercial aviation.
