This chapter discusses gusts and turbulence in two idealized forms: discrete gust and continuous turbulence. The process of determining the response of an aircraft to a discrete gust or continuous turbulence input is shown using a progression of models of differing complexity and using an analysis based in the time or frequency domain as appropriate. The chapter focuses on the symmetric vertical gust case. For a continuous turbulence excitation, the relevant frequency response function (FRF) is that between the response and a unit, harmonically oscillating, one‐dimensional gust field (or harmonic gust) determined over the frequency range of interest. The basic ideas underpinning analysis of the response to turbulence are illustrated in the chapter for both quasi‐steady and unsteady response‐dependent and gust‐dependent aerodynamics. The methodology is initially based on the heave only model and then extended to the heave/pitch rigid and flexible aircraft cases.
