The purpose of this chapter is to introduce the reader to the general principles and technologies employed in avionics computing. The chapter discusses the evolution of avionics systems from their inception as hardwired electro‐mechanical (relay) logic, through analogue electronics into task oriented digital computing with embedded application software in today's integrated modular avionics architectures.

The chapter introduces the basic principles of digital computing and the major components used e.g. microprocessors and data storage devices. It discusses the means by which a digital computer executes an instruction sequence to implement mathematical and logic expressions and make decisions based on their outcome. It describes the design process whereby airborne software (the application source code) is compiled and assembled into object code the machine can implement using rigorous design methods and tools.

The chapter outlines the process fabrication and packaging of large‐scale Integrated Circuits in Transistor Transistor Logic and Complementary Metal‐Oxide Silicon technologies and discusses the design of custom devices such as Application‐Specific Integrated Circuits and Field Programmable Gate Arrays as well as the special considerations required for the certification of complex hardware (RTCA‐DO‐254). The chapter discusses the interfacing of real‐world analogue signals using operational amplifiers to filter, scale and condition signals prior to their transference into the digital domain by analogue to digital and digital to analogue conversion processes highlighting the requirements and implementations for real‐time embedded avionics systems in terms of throughput, sample frequency/refresh rate, latency, accuracy, precision and resolution.
