A floating MOSFET gate drive (or Boot‐Strap circuit) is a commonly used circuit in automotive electronics design. Taguchi methods were used to optimize the performance of a discrete circuit that could replace an existing integrated circuit (IC) solution with significant cost reduction. An initial concept was developed but this exhibited severe variation over the intended operating range, and as such was not yet capable of the intended application. The control factors chosen were based on important component values and parameters, but also on several different subcircuit topologies. The application of Taguchi methods was successful in reducing variability over the operating range, improving absolute performance, and also indicating important component and subcircuit interactions that in some cases were counter‐intuitive. The ability to evaluate several circuit topologies and identify ultimate circuit tendencies greatly reduced design time over previous methods and resulted in a drastically improved design.
