There are two fundamental schools of thought in wing design (or lifting surface design in general), in terms of the cross section aspect. One treats this as a catalogue choice, where the airfoil is selected from the wealth of legacy shapes developed over the first century of flight. The other focuses on methods for the optimal customization of flexible, generic formulations to best suit the application at hand. This chapter looks at the second approach, reviewing a range of generic mathematical models, such as the Joukowski aerofoil, spline‐based techniques and the Kulfan CST transformation.
