The preliminary hazard and risk analysis (PHA) allows the vehicle manufacturer to include an early estimate of the properties of the interfaces and integration so that related requirements for supplier support are included in the RfQ and subsequent quote evaluation. The PHA can be performed efficiently by using a hazard and operability study (HAZOP) on the external interfaces of the safety‐related system. The intent for system safety in the manufacturing phase is to retain the safety designed into the automotive safety‐related system or component throughout production and assembly and into the product when it is manufactured. The design failure modes and effects analysis (dFMEA) can be used to identify and evaluate critical characteristics that need to be controlled in manufacturing. The design changes and manufacturing safety requirements are documented and made traceable to the manufacturing process, including configurable software that is specifically discussed in ISO 26262.
