This chapter covers the objectives, challenges, and implementation of closed‐loop active flow control (AFC) for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Modern AFC offers the advantage of aerodynamic performance enhancement. Making flow control useful for maneuvering requires an understanding of the performance of both the actuators and the flow in unsteady flow environments. The chapter also covers the historical development of and recent activity in the field, with emphasis on experimental implementation of open‐ and closed‐loop control approaches. It highlights the characteristics of various actuators, the flow sensing and measurement, and the methodologies employed to date in free‐flight in order to emphasize the choices, challenges, and potential of FC for UAVs. The principal difficulty is in designing a closed‐loop controller for dynamically changing situations. A key to success is the recognition that good control design must incorporate modeling of transient responses.
