This chapter illustrates how control allocation fits into a typical flight control system. Dynamic inversion has been chosen as a representative flight control methodology. There are many forms dynamic‐inversion control laws may take. One example of a simple dynamic‐inversion control law has been created using MATLAB/Simulink. The examples in the chapter use a simple linear model for the aircraft. The benefit of using a dynamic‐inversion control law is that one can use simple feedback control ideas to determine the command and regulator gains that will produce a desired response. Once a design is mature, with an established control effector suite and relatively well known control effectiveness data, the control laws can be customized to make use of the available acceleration capabilities. In a worst‐case scenario, the airplane temporarily goes open‐loop when it is unstable and it departs from controlled flight, potentially disastrously.
